We thought we’d start 2011 off with a free pattern to whet your appetite for the knitting year ahead! This gorgeous cardigan has been designed by Sandra Manson for Jamieson & Smith, and they’ve kindly given it to TheKnitter.co.uk to share with our readers.
The cardigan is knitted in Jamieson & Smith's new Shetland Chunky, which is worsted spun from their combed tops. main shade is Dumba, a lovely earthy brown that provides a great background for the contrast shades of Steekit, a pale sky blue, and Kirn Mylk, a creamy white reminiscent of the froth on waves. It’s very much a colour scheme inspired by the landscape of the Shetland Isles, the home of Jamieson & Smith.
The colours and shape of the cardigan also means it looks just as great on men as on women, making this a great project to knit for any of your friends or family.

Jamieson & Smith have been the major purchasers of the Shetland wool clip for over 60 years, annually buying from over 700 local producers. Located in Lerwick’s Old North Road, J&S are busy throughout the year, sorting and grading raw wool, to ensure the finest parts of each fleece go into the wide range of knitting yarns.
Each fleece is examined and hand sorted, the finest part contributing to the range of yarn, and the rougher parts being put into other products, such as Shetland wool carpeting, to ensure minimum wastage.
