These Scandinavian-style lady’s mittens, designed by Judy Furlong, are truly a work of art, with their delicate, thoughtfully created motifs.
Judy says: "These mittens draw their inspiration from the beautiful Selbu knitting styles of Norway, but with some notable departures – the motifs and the thumb shaping."
You can get hold of this pattern by buying a digital version of The Knitter Issue 27.
Judy adds: "However, they do retain a traditional Selbu eyelet rib and the pattern on the palm. The longship and eagle have a Scandinavian flavour while the little seahorse - seen as being full of mystique, even though it is only a curled pipefish – is just there to make you smile.""The mittens are knitted in the round and there is no grafting – just draw up the top and thumb stitches and fasten off. Some weaving in is necessary due to the otherwise long floats, but no special skill other than being comfortable with the Fair Isle technique is required."
Judy has knitted her mittens in two shades of Artesano Alpaca 4ply yarn. This is a beautifully soft yarn and comes in some delicious colours, so there are plenty of choices if you want to be inventive.
