Friday 26 October 2012 is St Mungo’s Woolly Hat Day, aimed at raising funds and awareness about homelessness in Britain today.
This year the charity is asking you get out your needles and help them produce a mountain of orange bobble hats, ready to be auctioned off to raise crucial funds to enable them continuing their work supporting homeless people as they rebuild their lives.
In total, they're aiming to have 5,678 woolly hats to auction off, so your input is definitely needed!
Shockingly this number hasn't been plucked out of the air, but represents the number of people who slept rough on the streets of London last year – a 43% increase on 2010/2011 figures. As the number of people sleeping rough continues to grow nationwide, your help is desperately needed.
You can download the official knitting pattern free of charge, courtesy of CalKnits, or buy a Woolly Madly Deeply knitting kit which contains 100g of bright orange wool and the pattern. The kit costs £5, with 20% from each kit going to St Mungo's.
Once your hats are finished, please send them to Loop, who have kindly agreed to store the hats for St Mungos. The address to post them to is Loop, St Mungo's WHD Appeal, 15 Camden Passage, Islington, London N1 8EA.
Then celebrate helping to kick off this year's Woolly Hat Day appeal!
