Maybelle matinee set by Sarah Hatton – issue 33

Maybelle matinee set by Sarah Hatton – The Knitter issue 33Create a special gift for a baby girl with Sarah Hatton’s classic matinee set in a soft, practical yarn.

A matinee set is a traditional gift for parents of a newborn, and these handknitted sets are still popular today - knitted with love, they are something special yet practical to give to a baby.

You can get hold of this pattern by buying a digital version of The Knitter Issue 33.

This soft, pretty jacket and hat set, designed for baby girls by Sarah Hatton, is written in four sizes, from tiny babies to 12 months old.

The jacket is knitted in one piece to the armholes, then divided for the fronts and back.

Sarah has used a contrasting blue colour for the cast-on edges and separating the moss stitch bodice from the lower sections; other pretty details include a band of simple Fair Isle around the lower edges of the jacket and hat, and inverted ‘V’ patterns on the left and right fronts which are achieved using slip stitch patterning.

It’s knitted in Patons’ soft, machine-washable Fairytale DK, a great-value yarn.

Both the hat and the jacket are completed with sewn-on crochet flowers, but leave these off if you prefer.
