Ever thought of knitting something as tiny as a brain cell? On 11 May 2011 the Cast On! knitting group organised by Ruth Chester of the Little Knitting Company is hosting an evening with neuroscientists from the British Society for Immunology.
The neuroscientists are currently inviting knitters to get together and knit brain cells and white blood cells, which will then be sewn together and displayed at Cheltenham Science Festival.
The scientists have promised to bring patterns, yarn and, Ruth says, “plenty of knowledge to answer any questions about the things that you’ll be knitting, the project or other areas of science.” She adds: “We're really excited about the event and I'm really encouraging local participation.”
If you can't make it to the Cast On! event, don't worry. Just go to www.immunology.org/msthebigknit to access patterns for everything from cells to chromosomes to DNA strands. Once knitted you can send your creations to:
MS: the big knit, BSI
37 Albert Embankment
London

They need to be received by 01 June, and will then be sewn together into three glorious tableaux designed with help from artist Alison Thompson. The tableaux will be displayed at the Cheltenham Science Fair to help raise awareness of the autoimmune disease Multiple Sclerosis.
Cast On's Multiple Sclerosis: the big knit takes place on Wednesday 11 May from 6pm at The Horse and Jockey, Stanford in the Vale, Oxfordshire, SN7 8NN
